How to Design a Patio

Good design in any discipline means aesthetic and practical needs are met.

Who?

When considering the design of your patio, we like to start with it’s desired use, who will be using it, how many people at most will it need to accommodate? Maybe your patio needs to have a smooth surface for wheelchairs or a basketball, (choose smooth top pavers in that case).

What?

What would you like to use the patio for, cooking, lounging, playing basketball? (Yes we can build basketball court patio for you). Is the patio a style element or accent to the home? What about a patio for extra parking space that doubles as a living space?

When?

When will the patio be used primarily, Fall? Then consider a fire pit or fireplace installation to make the atmosphere toasty. Will it be used in the Summer next to a pool? Use a light color material to reflect heat, then kids can go barefoot without burning their feet.

Where?

Location is one of the most important factors. Here’s what our designers recommend:

  • Place it closer to the house or pool patio for convenience
  • Place it nearer access points from a deck or door
  • Place it so that any desirable vistas are in sight
  • Place it in an area that best utilizes the topography

Why?

Why is a patio needed versus a deck? If there is a steeply sloped backyard, a deck may be a better option and even save you money. If you are trying to decide between a deck and a patio, read our Deck vs. Patio article Here >>
