Which is a better value?

Decks and Patios have been used for hundreds of years to extend the indoor living space to the outdoors. Both create a level, usable space for entertaining and recreation, but your home and habits help dictate which is better for you. Let’s find out which is a better value in your case!

Decks for a Town Home

Since most town homes have the kitchen and living area on the second floor, decks are the best starting point for a flexible budget* (we’ll explain what flexible budget means later), here are several benefits:

  • Decks are most convenient for a second story living space since there are no stairs to navigate.
  • Decks eliminate going up & down stairs, you walk straight onto the deck. Going up and downstairs can also be challenging to seniors and smaller children, and carrying food or other items up and down stairs is more work.
  • Decks elevate you above many biting insects and inherently have a better view and ventilation (which is handy if you are grilling).

*Having a flexible budget means you are willing to pay more for the convenience of a second story deck versus a patio. Ground level patios are much less expensive than elevated decks.

Town home Patio Installation

Many owners already have a deck provided by the builder for their town home, but they’re exploring the benefits of a ground level patio. Let’s look at some of the amazing things you get with a town home patio:

  • Privacy is one of the biggest benefits of having a ground level patio. You are out of sight from most of your neighbors so you can relax.

Ground level patios are much less expensive than elevated decks.

  • Storage space under your deck is increased when you install a patio underneath your deck. You will have a clean smooth surface to install a shed under your deck.
  • Of course, you can entertain or just hang out on your new patio, maybe install a hammock! If you’d like to use it after dark, installing low voltage lighting to create soft mood lighting is a huge upgrade.
